Gills And Grills

By far the worst Fish and Chips I've ever had. Ordered grilled Barramundi. It was covered in such a thick layer of batter that it was more like a large pancake with fish in it. Usually grilled fish just has a thin layer of batter to keep it together. This was 75% batter. Even if it was fried it would have been too much. The chips were pretty average. Potato cakes had the same issue as the fish. Too much batter, not well salted and super soggy. To top it all off they don't out your food on a tray like most F&C places do, instead they just wrap it in paper, meaning it gets soggy and soft while you drive home. Nothing was crispy except for a few tiny chips. I do not understand why there are so many 5 star reviews. Do people not have any taste buds?

We have been here a few times during busy and quieter times and have found it average. There are some great reviews here which is why we have given it a few tries. We order the same thing at every F&C shop, flake, chips and potato cakes. Unfortunately we found the flake dry and bland. The batter is thicker than we prefer and on the chewier side than crispy. The chips were also on the dry side. I am usually one to devour chips that are soft on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside so I hated seeing most of the chips going to waste. I also found myself peeling off the batter on the potato cake as it was quite thick and heavy. Just under $50 for the family pack and we could only get through half, we really did try to enjoy it but it missed the mark. Perhaps will give the burgers a go next time. On the positive side their service has been friendly despite busy periods and the store does have some seating.

We’ve always had very good food here. Am wondering if it has changed hands? We purchased both grilled and battered flake, potato cakes, steamed dim sims and chips. By far one of the worst fish and chips we’ve had anywhere. Fish was dry and chewy. Chips were dry. Tasted like they had been cooked twice. Even the potato cakes were dry. The steamed dim sims were at least edible as we threw out pretty much everything else and won’t be back. Very disappointing.

It's all too rare to have it all in the hospo game these days, especially when it comes to takeaway. Anyone that's been to McD's could attest to the rarity of even having a single good thing to write about, but I digress. Gills and grills have the skills that bring you thrills. From the warm welcome from Chris and the gang the second you walk in the door, to the setup, to the prices, to the smells that hint to the senses "I think we may be onto a winner here?!" The first bite of the souvlaki confirming my suspicions...This is takeaway at its best! Even after overindulging on the souvlaki, I found myself gorging on the wonderfully hot, crisp and fluffy chips. I'm not one to 'fish and chip' more than 5 times in a year, but it was so good, we went back a few days later. No regrets.
